An 8-week course

In this 8-week course, students will learn the fundamentals of creating a picture book from the first idea to the finished book. We’ll start from an idea and learn all the necessary steps to write and/or illustrate a picture book. 

Through lectures, demos, and exercises, students will work on their stories and will learn how to create and present a strong project, what to do with it and how to publish it.


The program will be focused on:

- Setting up your artistic goals / tasks / projects for next 8 weeks. 

- Self expression in visual storytelling.

- Best practices and challenges when facing a picture book project by yourself. 

-  Differences between types of books to illustrate and write. 

- How to pitch and put together an idea for an original picture book.

- Structuring time, meeting deadlines.

- Phases of a picture book project.

- Composition, colour theory, light, design. Digital vs Traditional art.

- Character clarity and narrative. Strong design, composition and colours.

- How I address structure, design and workflow in my picture books.

- The importance of the sketchbook.

- Developing a strong portfolio.

- Illustration and writing exercises.

- Publishers, agencies and how the money works.

- The art of exploring.

- Social media's role.

- Group discussions about all the above's different topics.

- Guest live talks and visits from some of the best Picture Book artists in the industry. Including Q&A.

    Every Monday, starting on July 7th, 2025 from 5-8pm (GMT+1)

    Class recordings will be available.

  • Skill level:

    All skill levels are welcome.

  • Personalised feedback

    You will receive personal feedback each week and, if you wish, develop your project or portfolio with me. 
    Spots are limited to 17

  • Format:

    3 hour live classes with combination of lectures, demos, and conversations.
    Recordings will be provided within 24 hours of each class and will be available to rewatch for 6 months.

    Students will each have their own space to communicate and share their work with me.

    Feedback will be sent individually each week.

  • Materials:

    Any digital or traditional media is welcome. Feedback will be given digitally.

  • Communication:

    There will be a Discord channel for us to share our work, share inspiration, links to all the documents shown during class, questions, etc.

  • Language:

    The class will be taught in English, with available subtitles.
    Personal feedback can be available in Spanish too.

Breakdown

  • Week 1: Introduction. We'll have an important chat about publishers, agencies and how the money works.
    Introduction to how to pitch and put together an idea for an original picture book.

    Week 2: Structuring out time and work. Phases of a picture book project. First approach to writing.

    Week 3: Self expression in visual storytelling. Character design research.

    Week 4: Visual research and exploration. Taking the time to explore how our book is going to look like. Making a first dummy with visual ideas.

    Week 5: Illustrating a book. Composition, design and narrative.
    Week 6: Colour composition and theory. Light and design principles. Digital vs Traditional art in Picture Books.

    Week 7: Cover design. Pitching/sending our Picture books to print.

    Week 8: The art of exploring. Wrap-up class. Show and tell of our projects. Q&A.
